I was commissioned to paint the Savior Jesus Christ with dark skin in 2025. As I began to consider the painting, ideas began to flood my mind. Jesus Christ is one of the most depicted figures in all of art history, worshiped by billions across the world. He is Savior for all people— whose love reaches every nation, every race, every soul. I felt honored and humbled by the thought.
I wanted this portrait to reflect that truth. My desire was to create an image of Christ that radiates love—one that allows the viewer not only to see Him, but to feel Him. His arms are open, inviting all to come unto Him. If this painting could touch hearts and draw even one soul closer to Christ, then it would fulfill its purpose.
During this journey, I was introduced to the book Expressions of Jesus, which explores how different cultures have portrayed Christ throughout history. As I turned its pages, I felt deeply the Savior’s all-encompassing love for every person on this earth and His continual invitation:
“Come unto Me.”
I was also reminded of a song written in 1951 by Wihla Hutson titled: Some Children See Him. It goes like this:
Some children see Him lily white, the baby Jesus born this night. Some children see Him lily white, with tresses soft and fair. Some children see Him bronzed and brown, The Lord of heav'n to earth come down. Some children see Him bronzed and brown, with dark and heavy hair.
Some children see Him almond-eyed, this Savior whom we kneel beside. some children see Him almond-eyed, with skin of yellow hue. Some children see Him dark as they, sweet Mary's Son to whom we pray. Some children see him dark as they, and, ah! they love Him, too!
Jesus Christ is the source of perfect peace and redeeming love. His love is not limited. It is not divided. It is not reserved for one people—it is extended to all mankind.
And through this image…through His open arms…He is still calling. Calling to the weary. Calling to the searching. Calling to the broken. Calling to every soul within the sound of His voice:“Come unto Me.” Matthew 11:28-30 (KJV). 28"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. 29 Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls.30 For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light."
And one day—He will come again.
Not as a painting. Not as an idea. But in power… and in glory. He will descend in the clouds, clothed in red—a symbol of the blood he shed in Gethsemane, of His atoning sacrifice, His victory, and His eternal love. And in that moment… every knee will bow, and every heart will know Him. So the question is not just who He is— The question is…Do we know Him? Do we feel His love? We know not the hour. Will webe ready when he returns?
During the 10 month time frame I completed a total of 12 portraits for the Morehouse project. The destination of the “Come Unto Me” painting was changed to Ebeneezer Baptist Church Horizon Sanctuary in Atlanta, GA. Where it now resides.
I completed seven portraits of the Martin Luther King Family which hang in the Morehouse College International Chapel hall of portraits. Part of this ten month project include portraits for the Latter Saints of Joseph Smith the prophet “Sunset on Nauvoo”, BYU Pres. Shane Reese and Tabernacle choir President Mike Levitt.
